Marcus started work for Lloyd's Syndicate 590 in 1985 and became the syndicate's claims manager in 1987. During his time in the market, in addition to insurance duties, he developed and used software for claims management and collection of reinsurance claims, as well as risk recording and aggregation. He developed a strong belief that insurance practitioners taking a direct interest in technology solutions could best solve the problems of computing in the market. Subsequently he was one of the first in the Lloyd's market to use PC technology for processing EDI messages. In 1990 he left Syndicate 590 to establish ROOM.
